Family Journaling
by Bernadine Cook
"Family Journal"
I came across this idea in a great book
entitled Families Writing written by Peter R. Stillman (see
our review). I keep a journal,
record frequently for my children in their baby journals, but I felt like
we needed to do something as a family. We needed a place where immediate
family could record snippets of their lives, conversations, milestones,
cute happenings. A place where a sentence written would be enough, a
statement about the day from the youngest writers in our family, for
instance. I wanted them to feel that what they had to write about us was
important, that what they wrote became part of our history.
Along came the Family Journal idea! Place
the Journal you’ve selected in a prominent place, ours is on a round
table in the living room, next to a comfortable chair. Easy to reach
black, non-smudging pens nearby make it very convenient and you are ready
to go. I had Jim make the first entry, since he is the Patriarch in our
home, besides I needed to feel supported...
Explain the Family Journal to the children,
grandchildren etc., that it isn’t a place to doodle while you’re on
the phone but a special book, something that they are going to have fun
reading one day. At the bookstore where I purchased our journal, I had
SEVY FAMILY JOURNAL engraved on the cover in gold lettering, the children
were very excited about this, it also emphasized the fact that this was an
important book.
I hope that this inspires you to start a
new tradition in your family!
