Splat mats

This is a fun art project, especially for the first week of school. A legal size piece of paper works better than an 8 x 10 piece, or you can use poster paper and cut it into 4. Have your child write his name on his splat mat, designing, drawing, coloring, using whatever medium he wants. You could use this project as a chance to teach a new medium, pastels, mosaics etc or to excite them about a new study topic, ie. draw a ship if you’re studying navigation. When the splat mat is designed according to your young artists pleasure laminate them. They now have a great, washable surface for working on other art projects, especially messy ones like play dough, silly putty, gluing, markers, even crayons, which seem to end up all over the table in our house.
